Jessica Ye Trainor:
I spent my childhood years in China, and lived in New York City for the next 15 years from the age of 12. When I almost forgot how to speak Mandarin as I don't use it enough in America, moving to Hong Kong and having my children become a huge reminder that I need to start picking up my first language and teaching my children our culture heritage.
Being in a mixed race marriage, it was initially difficult completely due to my laziness, and we didn't start teaching my older son Mandarin until he was 2.5 yrs old. My parents are extremely unhappy about our children not speaking Mandarin, so I started working on my audacious goal of raising them to be fully bilingual in English and Mandarin, living in a English speaking environment. I took Montessori training, Parent Effectiveness training, Mindful Parenting training, and kicked off my passion project in effective parenting and education. I made many mistakes and learnt a ton throughout raising two kids and sharing with many parents I interact with daily. I want to try to share my experiences and demystify what you may have heard about parenting, education and multilingualism. Feel free to email me with questions and I hope you my articles useful.
